some info on jdm SiR taillights..

i went to replace my boring usdm taillights with my spiffy jdm SiR taillights last weekend..i thought it was going to be a simple switch, but when i got the usdm lights out i noticed that the wiring connector was a little different. upon closer examination i found that the usdm lights were side marker-turn signal-brake-reverse in that order..the jdm lights don't have side markers, and go turn signal-brake-brake-reverse..i guess that's why the connectors were different. all i had to do was go to the junkyard and pull connectors off another 89 hatch, then wire those connectors into the jdm lights..the five wires are the same. they're real spiffy, and if anyone notices the lack of side markers during an inspection i can go home and swap the usdms back in. hopefull i'll be able to post pics in the next week or so. later

USDM cars are required to have a red light on the side of the rear of the car, whether it be in the tail light or a separate light down lower....the USDM tails have a small red part on the side after the amber part. the allure of the JDM lights is that they are all amber and look a bit cleaner.

I personally prefer all red...

Swap out your harnesses...that's what I did on my 89 CRX. It's easy. Just don't use the JDM. Also leave the sidemarker connector hanging or cut the wires and tape em up.

So... is this JDM? I'm not sure if these are the tails that came with the car or if Aussie tails have been swapped on.

Actually, I can't pick any difference between mine, the Australian ones or the ones that are on NZ SiR imports such as Moppie's at PH - the NZ imports don't require any compliancing mods - they are just registered as is - and my SiR hasn't had the JDM mirrors replaced or the fuel filler adapted to meet compliancing, so I can't see why the tails would have been changed.

Cool - I was pretty sure - I did some checking up - Japan stuff meets our ADesign regs so we get a reasonable amount of JDM stuff shared with our cars. Windshields and seatbelts dont meet our regs though.

The turn signals don't wrap around. It is almsot the same lense, except it has an orange peice of plastic behind it where the red reflector would be and then the orange side amrker signal light lense portion would be also...the turn signal does no wrap around the side...actually it's odd looking at them because you see a glimpse of the turn signal form the rear....that's why JDM car's come with side markers on their fenders....and the longer honda's have them also, like the Accords, on the rear bumper...at least I think they do, getting foggy, it's been like 3 years now since I was there.


What's really funny is there part numbers on the center lense ar exactly the same. So a vinyl sticker can make your lenses a set of VTEC lenses. But the outer lenses will tell you what is what. It's funny I've seen people by that center lense for over $100 and you'd think they'd notice and they never do.

However, and I need to correct myself, the 90-91 Lenses from Japan, have raised lettering! Not a painted white lettered lense. These JDM ones are off-white, kinda silver, and have plastic letters. That's when you know you have a JDM lense.
